Disaster struck on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, when the record for the Largest DDoS attack was broken. The assault on ‘‘Krebs on Security’’ left engineers at Akamai, the company that protects “krebsonsecurity.com”, bewildered.  Workers at Akamai watched the traffic being directed to their website drastically increase, which left engineers needing to act fast. Engineers worked endlessly to secure Krebs’ website and try and restore the mess that had overcome the network. This attack on Akamai was not like any other, topping the charts at 665 Gbps. This DDos attack is the largest attack that has ever been witnessed to date.

28742376_s.jpg Such an attack is due to a tried-and-true method known as a DNS Reflection Attack. This type of method allows hackers to have the ability to leverage unmanaged DNS Servers on the internet to generate massive traffic floods, leaving the victims websites offline for some time. Martin Mckeay, Senior Security Advocate at Akamai, stated that earlier this year the company witnessed a DDoS attack similar to the attack on “Krebs on Security”. The attack clocked in at 363 Gbps making it the second largest DdoS attack to ever be witnessed.

Now that hackers are learning how to mass attack major websites and companies, the level of security and heightened nerves are on hyper-alert.  Network Security is an area that is getting a lot of attention from these cyber criminals and we do not see it slowing down anytime soon. These DDoS attacks are coming from skilled groups that have been training to take down bigger companies and their major sites. We think there’s an answer to this, PACKETVIPER.  Our Advanced IP Filtering has changed the game for many and has reduced the amount of traffic entering networks.  So why not take the PacketViper Challenge and add our appliance to your network? It’s easy to do, replace nothing and improve everything.  PacketViper takes 5 minutes to install, recieve a 10 day free trial, and reduce at least 25% of unwanted, unsecure traffic entering your network.
